Research

Crack magazine can be picked up around Bristol and has information on shopping bars and clubs. I like the front covers of these regional magazines and I like how they have a main model with a the same white text down the side.

The Crack magazine is another regional magazine set in the North East of England.  You can see compare to a weekly magazine that the  text is limited and the picture takes up the whole page.

Westside CoversWestside Magazine

What I like about these magazines is the images and poses that the models are doing. I like how the colours are limited to just a few colours and dont go over the top.

Opinions

In order to get feedback members of the class wrote comments about my blog in order to give me ideas on how I could make it better. Comments included things such as having good information and layout. In order to make it better one comment gave me constructive critisim in such that I need to think of an image that would be eye catching for my regional magazine like other regional magazines show.

Structuralism

Taking the poster from Taken in to account when analysing the poster we could see the meaning that some of the conventions could mean. For ecample the red of Taken could mean blood / enemies whilst the gun can symbolise death and fighting. The poster is dark which would show the genre of the film being action and thriller.  The colours that are used symbolise dark and the colours of the characters costume show he's hard and determined.

Research

What Ive noticed from my research is that in regional magazines from the North East that the front cover usually features some scenery or building that shows the best of the North East. My original idea was to feature a celebrity on the cover but after doing more research in order to fit in with the style of the magazine I think it would be better to have the front cover without a celebrity. The living North one is one of my favourites because the colours go well with the image of the food bringing the whole magazine together.

Fonts

Northside, January 2012 cover image

These fonts are from different types of magazines some regional and some not. I like how all the fonts are simple and bold and this is where my inspiration for my magazine fonts will come. I also like that on the XXL magazine the red background and white text. That style is well known for XXl just as the Q magazine one has a red background also. I may incorparate this into my magazine also.

Moodboard

Because my magazine is focused on the region I included pictures on my moodboard that reminded me of Sunderland. I like how the footballer is holding the shirt that represents Sunderlands football club. This inspired me to make my model hold something that represents Sunderland. I also like the pictures of the stadium and the gardens in Mowbray Park because that could be the background to what Chelsea Creaser is opening or doing. Chelsea Creaser ( the celebrity) could be visiting the park or the stadium as an event or opening something.

Media Language Activity

Structuralism is deconstructing texts by examining the underlying structure. It  can come in different approaches including Semiotics which can be in the form of signs such as the highway code. The use of colours for example red being the sign to stop and we no this because we have been taught different understandings. Binary Oppositions which contrast two things such as adult/child , good/evil. Enigma Codes and Narrative Structures. Key Ideas of structuralism can be thought as the bigger picture. You understand the larger abstract structures which contain them.  The theory exists but deep within the text.
For my G324 work I have chosen to create a regional magazine and so will analyse a inspirational regional magazine that already exists. The glamour magazine featured below was a special regional addition that was personalised to those certain areas EG) London , Newcastle and Manchester. Barthes suggested that the meaning can be communicated through signs using the signifier and what it signifies. The heart on the London Tshirt can signifie love for the city. Binary oppositions take the form of contrasts that are used to create a sense of difference. The model on the page is shown happy emotions along with confidence which appeals to the reader because they want to feel that to. The colours are bright and drag the reader to the most appealling parts of the page. If a magazine were to be dull and boring the readers wouldnt want to pick up the magazine to buy. The pose which Katy is shown to have is showing her confidence also and the camera shot is a long shot which features the models full body shows this. The page layout is evenly spread with a simple font text. I like how the liptick symbolises with the colours.
